My Mother Made Me Mindful

A poem of gratitude, appreciation, and love for my mother, Lisa. [Mothers Day, 2021)

My Mother Made Me Mindful

My mother made me mindful

Of the way rain drips from pitched roofs,

How sunlight through crystal windows fills a house

How a door is an invitation to a space out of time.

My mother made me mindful

Of sadness and joy in the world,

How memories are constant companions

How love dresses for the weather.

My mother made me mindful

Of how to greet the stranger,

How we have always been strange

How we can never forget that.

My mother made me mindful

Of faithfulness in the face of heartache,

How a grasshopper pie is made of smiles

How a shaking child is stilled with a hug.

My mother made me mindful

Of sacrifice and ambition,

How a graphite sketch becomes truer with time

How photographs are more than stories.

My mother made me mindful

Of creator and created,

How the world is designed to be shared

How the bonds of family are everlasting.
